Living Data

Homeostasis

COMMENTS

Scientist Andrew Constable works at the Australian Antarctic Division. He builds models to predict changes in Earth systems. Here he responds to my question, "Is everything connected?" Our voices are combined with video recordings of expressions of connection to the sea. On the rocky shore of Rose Bay, Sydney, performance artist Catherine Magill practices "Authentic movement". Her 'dance' evolves as if spontaneously, from internal (unconscious) impulses. This practice is similar to "straight-ahead" animation, where a narraitive evolves in imagined space and time. I suspect this is also how scientists "think poetically", when making connections between patterns in data that allow for revelations of new hypotheses (stories).

Homeostasis: "Typically used to refer to a living organism, the concept came from that of milieu interieur that was created by Claude Bernard and published in 1865. Multiple dynamic equilibrium adjustment and regulation mechanisms make homeostasis possible." en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Homeostasis
